The Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory (RHDDO) is proudly owned by the City of Richmond Hill.
It is a National Historic Site and it is a designated site under the Ontario Heritage Act as well.
The RHDDO is still Canada's largest optical telescope with a primary mirror measuring more than 1.88 metres (74 inches) in diameter. The telescope, observatory building and dome were manufactured by the Grubb - Parsons Company, in Newcastle on Tyne, England.
Constructed in the 1930s, and opening in 1935, the Observatory is located in the heart of Richmond Hill. At the time of its completion it became the second largest optical telescope in the world.
The RHDDO is one of the largest publicly accessible telescopes in the world being used for optical viewing.
The RASC, Toronto Centre, is a proud program partner providing astronomical programming at the DDO.
You can come and visit either at one of our regularly scheduled events or you can book a group or personal tour for you and your friends (Date Night!).
As well as being an operator of Canad's largest telescope,
I've also been hired by the City of Richmond Hill as the "Visitor Experience Attendant" for the Tour the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory. From Victoria Day until Thanksgiving, the Observatory is open to the public, during the day, for a self guided tour of the Observatory buildings, which of course includes the 74" (1.88m) telescope.
